Malefic

The fuller picture

Take the correction first, because it undoes the most common misreading. Seven planets cover twelve houses, so Mars or Saturn will end up ruling the house your question turns on roughly two times in seven, and when that happens the malefic is not a threat to your matter — it is your matter. In one travel chart Saturn rules the ninth, sits in his own sign inside the ninth, and is read as the destination being in a very strong state: the trip itself is not the problem. The chart went on to answer no, for reasons entirely elsewhere. A malefic ruling the topic gets read exactly as a benefic ruling it would be, on its dignity and its placement.

The second correction is the one that surprises people, and the source states it against beginners by name. The intuition is that a debilitated, cadent, retrograde malefic must be a weakened malefic and therefore relatively harmless. The traditional reading is the opposite: the more a planet agrees with its surroundings, the more fully it acts, so a malefic that is essentially debilitated, in a difficult house, moving backwards, and throwing a hard aspect at a significator delivers the greatest harm available rather than the least. Every one of those conditions is a malefic thing, and they compound. That is worth flagging clearly, because our own engine currently reads it the other way — it grades a debilitated malefic in the house of the matter as threatening from a position of weakness. Where the two disagree, the doctrine above is the one an astrologer will hold you to.

Placement changes the reach rather than the nature. A malefic in the first house is read as having an increased ability to do harm across the whole chart. A malefic angular at the start of an undertaking is the old sign that the undertaking fails. A malefic in detriment is read as acting in a more warlike way, doing what it does to secure its own survival, which is covered on the detriment page. And a benefic can be pressed into malefic service by the house it rules, which is covered on the benefic one.

Reception can mitigate a malefic in particular traditional configurations, but it does not generically defuse one. A malefic holding dignity in the rising sign and making the specified contact can become the agent that brings that particular matter about. Houlding's scorpion judgment supplies the limit: mutual reception made the Venus–Mars contact especially strong and still did not make Mars safe. A soft aspect from a malefic is therefore not by itself an argument for benefit.

One last thing to be careful about. Two malefics afflicting both sides of a question is not a stronger no than one; in a lawsuit rule where both rulers are afflicted by the malefics, the judgment is that neither side wins and both are ruined by pursuing it. The reading is about who gets damaged, and it will not always resolve into a yes or a no.
