Ask most people what a planetary hour is and they'll guess it's a clock hour with a planet's name attached. It isn't, and the difference is the whole system. Planetary hours are older than mechanical clocks, they stretch and shrink with the seasons, and they quietly explain something you use every day without knowing it: the order of the days of the week.
The short answer
A planetary hour is not always sixty minutes. Daylight is split into twelve equal parts and night into twelve equal parts, so their lengths change with the season and place. Think of slicing a longer summer day and a shorter winter night into the same number of pieces: the pieces cannot all be the same size.

Not clock hours: how the system divides the day
The astrological day begins at local sunrise, not at midnight. From sunrise to sunset, daylight is divided into twelve equal parts — these are the day hours. From sunset to the next sunrise, the night is divided into twelve more — the night hours.
Because daylight is rarely twelve clock hours long, a planetary hour is almost never sixty minutes. If the sun rises at 06:00 and sets at 18:00, each day hour happens to run sixty minutes. But in midsummer at a northern latitude, a day hour might run eighty minutes while a night hour runs forty; in midwinter the two swap. The day hours and the night hours are different lengths on the same date, and both change through the year.
This is why you can't memorise the hours or read them off a generic table. They are specific to a place and a date — a different longitude, a different season, or a different time zone gives a different answer.
The Chaldean order, and who rules what
Each hour belongs to one of the seven traditional planets, and the sequence never varies. It is the Chaldean order, running from the slowest visible planet to the fastest:
Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon — then back to Saturn, round and round.
The starting point is set by the day itself. The first hour of daylight belongs to that day's own ruling planet: the Sun rules the first hour of Sunday, the Moon the first hour of Monday, Mars the first hour of Tuesday, and so on through the week. Every following hour steps one place along the Chaldean order, wrapping around as it goes.
Why the days of the week are in that order
Here is the part that makes the system feel less like trivia and more like archaeology. Count twenty-four hours forward through a repeating seven-planet cycle and you land three full cycles plus three steps along — which means the first hour of the next day always falls to the planet three places further along the Chaldean order.
Start Sunday's first hour with the Sun and step through it: the twenty-fifth hour — the first hour of the next day — belongs to the Moon. Monday. Run it again and you get Mars: Tuesday, still visible in the French mardi. Again, Mercury: mercredi. Jupiter: jeudi. Venus: vendredi. Saturn: Saturday.
The order of the days of the week is not arbitrary and was never decided by a committee. It is the planetary hours, fossilised into the calendar. The Chaldean sequence itself is Babylonian, but the seven-day planetary week built out of it is Hellenistic — it appears in Greco-Roman Egypt around the turn of the era and spreads from there. Every time you say "see you Wednesday" you are quoting that Hellenistic timing system.

The arithmetic is simple but tedious: you need the exact local sunrise and sunset for your place and date, the length of daylight divided by twelve, and a count forward from the day ruler through the Chaldean order.

One honest limit, because a tool that hides its edges isn't worth trusting: at very high latitudes some dates have no sunrise or sunset at all. During polar day or polar night the traditional calculation has nothing to divide, and the only correct answer is no settled result — which is what the calculator says, rather than inventing one.
What horary astrology actually does with the hour
In horary, the planetary hour has one famous job and one quieter one, and they are usually collapsed into each other.
The famous job is the first test of radicality — the opening check among the considerations before judgment that ask whether a chart is fit to read. The test compares the hour lord — the planet ruling the hour the question was asked in — against the rising sign. Tradition gives the chart a pass four ways:
- The hour ruler rules the rising sign. Mars in a Mars hour with Scorpio rising.
- The hour ruler is the rising sign's triplicity ruler for the chart's sect — William Lilly's version, which uses his own day/night triplicity table.
- The hour ruler's nature matches the rising sign's, on both humoral axes — hot/cold and dry/wet. Mars is hot and dry, so Mars agrees with the fire signs; Jupiter is hot and wet, so Jupiter agrees with the air signs. Note that this branch compares the hour ruler with the rising sign, not with that sign's ruler.
- The hour ruler and the ruler of the rising sign sit in signs of one triplicity. This is Guido Bonatti's alternative rather than Lilly's, and Deborah Houlding accepts it alongside Lilly's three in her own practice, because too many plainly sincere charts show no hour agreement on the stricter reading.
Any of the four, and the chart is confirmed as being in tune with its question.
What is a pass actually worth? Less than its prominence suggests. Agreement is a confirming signal — the chart nodding along — and disagreement forbids nothing. The practitioners whose doctrine we follow have never once refused to read a chart over the hour, and our own engine treats a failed test the same way: a single minor note saying the confirmation is absent, which never withholds judgment. Treat a match as a small reassurance and a mismatch as a note in the margin.
The quieter job is more interesting: the hour ruler can be read as testimony in its own right, describing the matter rather than validating the chart. Traditional medical practice leans on this — a question asked in the hour of Saturn colours the illness with heaviness and delay; a physician first consulted in the hour of Jupiter or Venus gets on well with the patient whether or not the treatment works. The hour describes the flavour of the moment. When someone tells you the hour matters, it is worth asking which of these two jobs they mean, because they are different claims with different weights.
Do planetary hours tell you when to act?
This is the question most people arrive with, and it deserves a straight answer: a planetary hour is one traditional timing factor, not a promise. Starting a venture in the hour of Jupiter does not make it succeed; sending a message in the hour of Venus does not make it land warmly. The hour is a single voice, and real electional judgment weighs the whole chart — the Moon's condition, the significators, the aspects in play — before it weighs the hour.
