Sextile

The fuller picture

Two signs apart, 60° of separation, which in practice pairs fire with air and earth with water. The contact meets less resistance than a square or opposition. That says nothing by itself about cooperation, consent or whether the outcome is good.

Here's the distinction that earns the page. A sextile is not a small trine — it's the aspect whose value swings most on reception. The tradition we follow puts it plainly: a sextile carries half the power of a trine, so it needs reception to work out with the same force. With reception it sits on the top rung of the ladder, level with a trine that has none, and the equivalence is stated twice in the same chapter. Without reception it drops a rung, and the matter comes about with greater challenges and more effort than the aspect's reputation suggests.

So the practical rule is asymmetric inside this traditional ladder. With a trine, reception does not change the rung. With a sextile, reception supplies half the traditional strength. Some sextiles carry the same force as a trine; others sit closer to a square, and the geometry alone still does not tell you whether the outcome is beneficial. Settle the reception and the planets' condition before interpreting what the contact brings.

Two things a sextile still can't do. It can't make a promise the chart hasn't made — a sextile between planets that don't stand for the sides of your question isn't testimony about your matter — and it can't survive the wrong sender: a sextile or trine from one of the malefic planets is held to profit nothing unless reception is present, which is the same asymmetry from the other direction.

In our own engine the sextile is grouped with the trine as an easy perfection and scored identically, so the received and unreceived cases don't yet separate in the verdict. That's recorded as a gap rather than a doctrine, and it's why the chart lists every reception between the two significators, graded by the dignity it rests on, instead of quietly folding them into a number.
