The fuller picture

A quarter of the circle apart puts two planets in signs that share a quadruplicity but not an element — both cardinal, say, but one fire and one water. The traditional reading follows from that mismatch: the two want the same kind of thing at the same speed and want it in incompatible ways, so whatever passes between them passes under strain.

The single most common misreading in horary is treating a square as a denial. It isn't one. A square is an affirmative rung on the ladder, and which rung depends entirely on reception: a square with reception gives matters that come to be with striving, and a square without reception gives matters that come to be with striving, effort and much labour. Both of those are outcomes that arrive; the square describes the effort involved rather than cancelling the result.

That reception swing is the widest one there is, and it's the practical reason to check reception before you read any hard aspect. With reception, a square stands beside a sextile that has none. Without it, a square stands beside an opposition that has reception. Identical geometry, two rungs apart, and the only variable is whether the planets welcome each other. It's also stated directly in the relationship rules, where a square between the chief significators is read as much fighting and contention on its own, and then explicitly overridden: if there's reception, even a square gives a positive outcome, while a square without reception has the match broken off and coming to nothing.

How to read the effort depends on what was asked, and this is where a scoring model stops helping. An outcome reached through great striving is the point of a question about a contest — that's what winning against the odds looks like in a chart. The same configuration in a question about affection describes trying to force something that isn't there. The geometry is neutral about which of those you're living through; the question isn't.

Two qualifiers to finish. The planet throwing the aspect counts: a square from one of the benefics is held to destroy nothing, which is worth knowing before you read a square from Venus as an obstacle. In our own engine a square between the two rulers registers as a perfection at full weight, with difficulty, resistance or labour recorded separately as its manner.
