Reception

The fuller picture

A planet is received when it stands in another planet's domicile or exaltation, or in at least two distinct minor dignities belonging to that same planet. A lone triplicity, term or face does not meet the definition. The second planet is the receiver. Whether an aspect between them is also required is the one point on which the sources we work from disagree, and it is worth setting out plainly rather than presenting either side as settled.

The stricter reading requires the aspect: two planets sitting in each other's domiciles with no aspect between them are not in reception at all but in each other's generosity, a distinct and weaker condition, and signs that aspect each other are not enough — the planets themselves must be within orb. That is Houlding's position, stated while correcting an earlier author's claimed mutual reception. Lilly's own text can be read the other way. Writing of a marriage question he describes an application "by square or opposition, and with reception" — two conditions joined by an "and", suggesting that reception and aspect are distinct. The current engine uses that positional reading and treats an aspect as strengthening reception rather than creating it. C-046 records this as unresolved implementation behaviour, not settled doctrine; until Boss rules it, a reception label without an aspect is provisional.

The friendlier account you will meet elsewhere is that reception simply means sympathy or goodwill, with mutual reception as two planets sitting in each other's signs. Half of that is wrong and half is overstated. Reception is not the planets swapping places, and letting apparent warmth override the contact mechanics is a common way to talk yourself into a yes. Reception can describe disposition: the receiver may be better disposed toward the received or more willing to accommodate them. That can remain cited descriptive evidence, but this app does not turn it alone into a verdict or proof of love, intent or future action; its absence is not proof of indifference.

Reception doesn't create a promise; if the chart never showed a route to the outcome, reception won't conjure one. When reception qualifies an existing contact, it can strengthen or alter that contact without automatically making it reassuring: in Houlding's scorpion judgment, mutual reception strengthened a contact she still treated as dangerous. Particular traditional rules can let reception mitigate a difficult perfection, but that result belongs to the complete rule and the planets involved — it is not a generic meaning of reception.

So reception changes what an aspect means, and the order of operations matters: settle the reception before you interpret the aspect. Not all sextiles are made equally. Bonatti graded the combinations into four bands of difficulty, and the equivalence at the top is the one worth memorising — a sextile with reception carries the force of a trine without one, because a sextile alone has half a trine's power. A square with reception still arrives, through striving. An opposition with reception arrives only through real labour. An opposition without it is hardly brought to perfection at all.

The lower bands want reading rather than scoring. An outcome reached by great effort is the point of a question about a contest; the same configuration in a question about affection describes forcing something that isn't there. Further down the ladder, the question stops being whether the thing can be had and becomes whether it's worth having.
